She Loves to Cook and She Loves to Eat (作りたい女と食べたい女) is known as a wholesome yuri manga (and drama) series about two women who develop a bond over cooking and eating. The epitome of this has to be when I asked a Portuguese speaker to translate "COSA FEIA! UMA CRIANCA FUMANDO" and then the response "E So Pra Tirar Gosta Da Cachaca" into Spanish... But since Spanish and Portuguese are so similar I got an entirely different translation out of it than THE ACTUAL SPEAKER of the language did. I am a Native Spanish Speaker and sorta get Portuguese because its so similar to Spanish,.

DiC is not pronounced DiC but the correct version might not be allowed on youtube lol. Also The DiC dub has ONE REALLY legit lovely localization. When Naru asks Nephrite "If his Evil Organization gives him free Sundays". This is a bit confusing for a foreigner, why not Saturday too? Because in Japan your only day off is sunday. So DiC just goes "Do you have any holidays in that evil society of yours?" which is just amazing.

Its so cool that you did the translations, I actually thought about the subs alot watching it and wondered how it translated so naturally from japanese, your subs really fit into the whole mood of the series and kept the humor that I worried could have been lost in translation, great job, you really did this amazing anime justice!!!

Oooh, I remember this drama, I remember not liking the person who said this (you, I guess) but ultimately just moving on with my life. This was a really interesting video, and I enjoyed it. Context is really fun to get into and if I'm correct in assuming the anime was うる星やつら then the world incel is completely acceptable 🤣

I'm so glad you're talking about this manga! I love food, although more-so the eating than the cooking, so it was an absolute win for me. I love the dynamic the author has created for the women and can't wait to continue reading it. ( I tried to get my sister's girlfriend to check it out, but she didn't like that they weren't dating by the end of the 1st volume... 😅)

Thankfully when i googled boob bag i found this video. Thanks sarah, this really stopped me wondering. I assumed it was a japanese term for a particular way of patterning fabric. Having watched your video i would say the best term in english would be skin tight. And i agree with you, boob bag is not an appealing term at all which is why it bothered me enough to looking into it. Anyway, i can now put it to bed & not boggle my mind with it anymore. I'll simple retranslated it as 'skin tight top'...or something similarly bland. Thanks again sarah.

This just proves that language is like a living thing. It grows and evolves. It branches and forms different families. Example: ENGLISH. You have: British English, Australian English, American English (Southern, West Coast Valley Girl, East Coast New Englander, New Yorker, Mid West Country, Red Neck), etc etc etc. Each of them has a shared base but each also has developed special phrases, and meanings for those phrases or alternate meanings for the same words specific to them.

Localization is by far superior. Take Spanish for example. The way you would say "bad ass" in Spanish is not remotely similar to the English words. Using the literal words would be like saying "not good but" in Spanish if you did say "a La madre" (to your mother) its understood in the culture you mean "bad ass"-really cool -.

"I'm starting to think this is all just outrage for the sake of outrage." I think you may be on to something there. In all seriousness, I'm glad I came across this video. It's refreshing to see someone speak from an intellectual middle position on this controversy that I've only heard mutterings from both sides about. I think I've decided that for now, my enjoyment of anime is not ruined by a few questionable translations, and I have extra motivation to also continue learning Japanese myself, after hearing (and being impressed by) your knowledge of it. So thank you for this. I think it would do everyone on both sides some good to see this video. Edit: After seeing the end, I just wanted to add that my final takeaway on Marchi is that I don't think she did a bad job like people are making it out on her localization, but I do think she's done a pretty bad job of responding to the criticism. Your response is easily lightyears above anything she's said about the situation in both class, and productive education.

Oof. This is really changing my mind on a lot of things about translations, mostly towards the strictly literalist. All these translation examples lose so much of what makes the show great. I get that it's a hard job translating a show where the exact phrasing holds so much importance for both comedy and emotional content, but, yikes.

I’m a big fan of a French cartoon called “Wakfu”, I also studied some French and consider myself good with how languages work. It’s a shared opinion by the fans of the show that the English dub is absolute garbage, for a few different reasons. But when I was rewatching it again with subtitles on Netflix (in other words, the subs I was reading were the words spoken in the English dub) I realized how absurdly literal the script was. Almost every word was a direct translation and it absolutely RUINED the flow of the dialogue. As a writer myself I was actually really upset that the staff stayed so literal and didn’t take more creative liberties to make the story flow better. Being such a big language nerd I really enjoy this type of videos!

There are a number of comments discussing not being able to tell if the video is satire or not. I ended up watching the video all the way through until the very end and wanted to share my thoughts. First off i agree with literal translations due to the language barrier it would be near impossible. For example if the line in question was "These baked potatoes are good. Did you bake them yourself?" The translation might read as "baked potato yum. Yourself?" Which clearly would make no sense. And with lip syncing lines the line could end up being "Did you make these potatoes yourself? They're very good." Which in itself I don't see much of an issue with as it's portraying the same exact meaning just worded differently. Where I think many are finding issue is when the line goes from being about baked potatoes to something about a social or political nature. Which to be fair I get why people would be mad about it. As several translators have stated which I tend to agree with the best method someone can avoid that is learning the language themselves to remove the middle man. Personally for me I've never found too much of an issue with translations as for me I'll watch the sub then the dub so I'm getting two entirely different versions of the same show. In regards to censorship though i completely agree with you. I do feel that should be the primary focus of anime fans. That and calling a rice ball a donut because its been well over 25 years and I'm still a bit salty about that thank you very much.
